Abstract

SCARPATI, Arielle Sagrillo; GUERRA, Valeschka Martins  and  DUARTE, Camila Nogueira Bonfim. Adaptation of the Rape Myth Acceptance Scale: Evidences of validity. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.13, n.1, pp. 57-65. ISSN 2175-3431 .

Rape myths consist in stereotyped beliefs about rape, its victims and offenders. The scarcity of information about these myths in Brazil motivated this research, which aimed to validate the Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, presenting evidences of validity in a sample of Law undergraduate students and verifying the existence of possible differences regarding participants’ gender, as well as associations with social desirability, age and religiosity. 281 students participated with a mean age of 23.6 years, mostly female. They answered the Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, the Social Desirability Scale and socio-demographic questions. Results indicate four factors as an adequate structure, which did not confirm the original structure of the measure, represented by seven factors. Significant results were observed in relation to religiosity and participants’ gender. The proposed scale presents acceptable psychometric parameters for use in research on the topic.

Keywords : rape myths; sexual violence; validation; social desirability.
