This article surveys instruments for assessing depression as a trait and as a state, including psychometric and projective techniques. The concept of depression is presented, followed by the presentation of psychological tests for the assessment of depression and personality (which include the measurement of depression as a trait) that are approved by the Federal Council of Psychology (CFP). Eleven instruments were identified as favorable for this construct (six psychometric and five projective), which was considered a positive result, considering the total number of instruments approved by CFP. The instruments are described with regard to their advantages and limitations for the assessment of depression. Finally, we discuss the usage of these instruments by the psychologist and some factors that should be considered when selecting an instrument to assess this phenomenon.
