Abstract

FERREIRA, Lucilene; NEVES, Angela Nogueira; CAMPANA, Mateus Betanho  and  TAVARES, Maria da Consolação Gomes Cunha Fernandes. AAOS/IWH guide: Suggestions for cross-cultural scale adaptation. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.13, n.3, pp. 457-461. ISSN 1677-0471.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons/Institute for Work and Health guide was originally formulated to provide directives for cross-cultural scale adaptations in quality of life studies. The guide’s objectivity and clarity contribute to its dissemination among different areas. The guide suggests five steps for cross-cultural scale adaptation: (1) independent translation; (2) translation synthesis; (3) back-translation of the synthesis; (4) expert committee assessment; and (5) pre-test. The aim of this research was to report two alterations experienced at the two later steps of the guide. During expert committee assessment, we suggest the inclusion of individuals from a scale’s target population. During pre-test, we suggest a reduction of the sample with a deeper investigation of each participant. We observed a better conceptual and cultural equivalency with the adoption of these alterations.

Keywords : questionnaires; translating; cross-cultural comparison.
