Abstract

MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira  and  BRITO, Fernanda de Souza. Personality assessment and social networks: An integrative proposal. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.1, pp. 107-114. ISSN 1677-0471.

This theoretical study explores possibilities of interaction between personality assessment and social networks analysis. The socioteleological view of personality recommends that psychological assessment should take into account the distinction between identity (how the individual perceives him or herself) and reputation (how the individual is perceived by their peers). The psychological assessment of personality has been based on statements from respondents of psychological instruments categorized between psychometric and expressive. It is argued that these measures reveal different components of identity and that the reputation should be investigated in the report of observers. It is also argued that social network analysis is a way of assessing the reputation that offers incremental validity to the classical methods of personality assessment. We conclude that this is a promising line of research and theory building with potential impact on psychological practice.

Keywords : social networks; psychological assessment; personality.
