Abstract

WACHELKE, João  and  RODRIGUES, Laiz Bueno. Exploratory study of the relationship between basic personal values and psychosocial values. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.14, n.3, pp. 353-363. ISSN 1677-0471.

With consideration of two theories on values, whose relationships have not been studied, the present study aims to conduct exploratory analysis of the correlations between adapted versions of measures of the functional theory of human values (Basis Values Survey) and of the social approach to values (Psychosocial Values Questionnaire), while assessing the possibility of explaining their indicators through common latent dimensions. The participants were 722 secondary school students from Uberlandia, Minas Gerais, who completed adapted versions of the two measures. Bi-variate correlations and exploratory factor analysis containing items from both scales were carried out. The factor analysis suggested four explanatory dimensions, two of them near-overlaps with the original measures and the other two identifying a work ethic to obtain materialistic gains and social solidarity goals. It is concluded that the joint study of the two theories might expand the understanding of values beyond the scopes of the original perspectives
