This study investigated the subjective well-being (SWB) of institutionalized and non-institutionalized older adults using Pfister's Colors Pyramid Test (CPT). Participants were 70 older adults aged 80 years or over, with 35 being residents of Long Term Care Institutions (IG) and 35 living in the Community (CG). They were individually assessed through the application of a sociodemographic questionnaire, the CPT, the Positive and Negative Affections Scale, the Geriatric Depression Scale - short form, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the CPT, and they both presented preservation of affect, even with less elaborate cognitive functioning (predominance of carpets). The IG presented signs of worse functional conditions and statistically lower positive affection (PANAS), with a tendency for lower self-esteem (RSS). Both groups showed signs of depressive experiences (GDS-SF). The findings contribute to an understanding of psychodynamics in aging and to the future planning of intervention strategies that encourage SWB in older adults.
