Abstract

MAGALHAES, Andréa Seixas. Male identities: limits and possibilities. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2006, vol.12, n.19, pp. 54-65. ISSN 1677-1168.

Using a psychosocial approach, the authors discuss the limits imposed by gender stereotypes to the construction of a masculine identity, as opposed to the possibilities of subjectivity in a cultural scene of plural identities. Emphasis is given to the stereotyped socialization of boys, in a process where the social-historical context in which the parents grew up is superimposed to the one in which the boy is socialized, reinforcing certain gender beliefs. The traditional model of virility, which reigned absolutely until a few years ago, and valued characteristics such as ignoring emotional needs, competition, preoccupation with performance, authoritarianism, domination and oppression, is currently being questioned as the greatest pillar of traditional masculine identity.

Keywords : Masculine identities; Subjectivity; Plural identities; Stereotypes.
