Abstract

RIBEIRO, Sandra Fogaça Rosa; YAMADA, Midori Otake  and  TAVANO, Liliam D’Aquino. Experience of mothers of children with hearing impairment in a waiting room. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp. 91-106. ISSN 1677-1168.

This is a study of the experience of mothers of children with hearing impairment in a waiting room, while waiting for their appointment with the interdisciplinary team of the Centro de Pesquisas Audiológicas - CPA (Center for Audiological Research) of the Hospital de Reabilitação de Anomalias Craniofaciais - Universidade de São Paulo - HRAC/USP (Hospital for Rehabilitation of Cranio-facial Anomalies), in Bauru, State of São Paulo. The aim was to identify, analyze and understand that experience concerning what was most significant in it. The research was based on a qualitative approach, following a phenomenological model. The results showed a spontaneous group configuration, as the mothers got together, in four categories: similar experiences, mutual help, education/learning and insecurity in the waiting room. The last part contains suggestions for a group approach to mothers in waiting rooms as another opportunity of care to the attended population.

Keywords : Hearing impairment; Waiting room; Self-help groups; Phenomenological research.
