Abstract

JARDIM, Katita  and  DIMENSTEIN, Magda. Risk and crisis: thinking about psychiatric urgency. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.1, pp. 169-190. ISSN 1677-1168.

This article focuses on Psychiatric Urgency and its fundamental concepts, risk and crisis. In many places, the mental health network does not have enough support to attend patients during their crises, and urgency services become responsible for the task. As a result, the mental health network, which still considers Mental Health Hospitals the most important and complex source of care support, increases the flux of patients in asylums, disregarding all the principles of Psychiatric Reform. Thus, it is necessary to discuss urgency services and devise strategies able to create new contexts that emphasize not the crisis and its symptoms, but the person suffering. People in crisis normally need help, and, in some cases, that help must be immediate. It is important to deconstruct the concept of urgency in psychiatry and consider a form of care-ethics consisting of urgent care of the person in crisis.
