Abstract

GOLDSMID, Rebeca  and  FERES-CARNEIRO, Terezinha. The fraternal function and the vicissitudes of being and having a sibling. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.2, pp. 293-308. ISSN 1677-1168.

Although siblings play an important role in a subject’s constitution, it was only since the last decade that contemporary authors have become interested in studying the fraternal relationship. Most of the studies, however, focus on its competition and rivalry rather than on its positive aspects. In this article, based on the psychoanalytic approach, the classics - Freud, Klein, Adler - are reviewed, followed by contemporary authors, in a study of the dynamics of fraternal relationship, considering its features of competition and rivalry, as well as the ones of companionship and solidarity. The important role played by brotherhood in establishing the siblings’ subjectivity is thus attested.

Keywords : Sibling; Fraternal function; Brotherhood.
