Abstract

FURTADO, Janaina Rocha  and  ZANELLA, Andréa Vieira. Visual arts in the city: aesthetic relations and subjectivity. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2007, vol.13, n.2, pp. 309-324. ISSN 1677-1168.

The contemporary relations that people establish with the city are predominantly practical and utilitarian, constituted in the performance of daily activities. It is demonstrated that urban visual arts can promote the formation of other relations between the subject and the city, favoring aesthetic experiences that come to modify and amplify those relations and to promote an aesthetic education through the sensibility of the eyes. This article presents reflections on those issues, considering the consequences of modernization of cities and modernism in art for current aesthetic experiences in urban contexts. In that sense, emphasis is given to human beings’ relations with visual arts in the city and a discussion about the relevance of the aesthetic experience and education in the constitution of subjects.
