Abstract

SILVA, Elisa Alves da  and  COSTA, Ileno Izídio da. Mental health workers’ mental health: an exploratory study with professionals in Psychosocial Attention Centres in Goiânia, Goiás State. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.1, pp. 83-106. ISSN 1677-1168.

This article presents an investigation of the care(less) relations that permeate daily work and influence the mental health of Psychosocial Attention Centres (CAPS) professionals in the city of Goiânia, Goiás State, Brazil. Three groups were formed with twenty-two participants representing different professional categories. The adopted methodology was research-action combined with operational groups. A content analysis of the obtained data was carried out. Four categories were emphasized: care experiences with the care professionals at work, personal relations, psychic suffering and the difficulties and challenges to work with the new mental health care model. As a result, it was observed that the psychic health experience permeates the complexity of care(less) relations established with professionals, others (clients and work colleagues) and the institution (work organization). The research shows the need for investments and actions giving priority to the professionals’ mental health issue, as well as an adequate public policy with that purpose.
