Abstract

TELES MOURA, Luciana  and  GARCIA, Agnaldo. Interpersonal relationships and media: friendships in Castelo Rá-tim-bum. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.2, pp. 133-151. ISSN 1677-1168.

This study aimed at investigating some aspects of friendship (friend network, similarity, shared activities, communication, cooperation, social support, intimacy, emotional aspects, conflict, aggressiveness and competition) in the main characters of Castelo Rá-tim-bum. The content of 20 episodes was examined and classified according to pre-established categories, and the data were compared with those of the scientific literature on friendship in childhood. Results showed a narrower although more diversified friend network regarding gender, age and ethnicity than those observed in real life. Positive aspects of shared activities, communication, cooperation, social support, as well as emotional and cognitive aspects are highlighted in the show, indicating the idealization of friendship. On the other hand, possible negative aspects such as conflict, aggressiveness and competition are practically absent. It was concluded that the show presents an idealized form of friendship, which may contribute to the establishment of an ideal of friendship in children who watch it.
