Abstract

O. MONIZ DE ARAGAO, Cristal  and  ARRUDA, Angela. Bahia, a Brazil evoked in exoticism: joy, negritude, flavor and movement in the social representations of university students. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2008, vol.14, n.2, pp. 187-201. ISSN 1677-1168.

This paper discusses the social representation of Bahia for a group of 1.029 university students from seven states of the five regions of the country. Interested in the social construction of realities, we used Moscovici’s and Jodelet’s theory of social representations as a tool to understand the psycho-social mechanisms involved in this process. A questionnaire also composed of sketch drawings went through a category and thematic content analysis according to Bardin’s perspective. Results showed a prominence of Bahia over other states, in matters related to knowledge and information as well as in more specific ones, such as cultural manifestations and historical events that characterize that state. The set of results presents a positive social representation of the place, composed of elements that mark a social identity highlighted by an exotic approach, apprehended as an anthropophagic visibility strategy
