Abstract

This paper discusses the implantation and development of a reading workshop carried out with prisoner in a prison in Rio de Janeiro. The workshop belongs to the set of proposals that use art as a tool for the production of subjectivity and social change and also as a cognitive and existential politics. In order to understand the prison-institution, the text makes use of the ideas of Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault and Loïc Wacquant. Concerning the production of subjectivity studies, the text takes Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Virgínia Kastrup as a theoretical framework. For the practice of group reading, weekly meetings were held with a group that was heterogeneous concerning level of schooling. Reports of those meetings are presented in order to show the group dynamics and the manifold effects they produced. The text analyses the power of art, namely that of literature, as a factor that can expand the subjectivity in the atmosphere of violence and deprivation that is charachteristic of the prison institution.
