The self-determination theory - SDT was elaborated by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci in 1981, aiming at establishing a psychology with social and political responsibility, so as to define variables to be operated, including public policies purposes, focused on psychological health and well-being. This article presents the main concepts of SDT and some studies based on that theory. The basic hypothesis of STD of a self-determined behavior being a factor of psychological health was confirmed by research conducted for more than 30 years. One concludes that those theoretical concepts could easily be applied, at low cost, to educational institutions or public health agencies
