Abstract

GOMES, Rui  and  SILVA, Luiz. Eating disorders and perfectionism: a study with Portuguese athletes. Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2010, vol.16, n.3, pp. 469-489. ISSN 1677-1168.

This study analyses the relationship between eating disorders and perfectionism in sport. Two hundred and ninety nine athletes competing in the main sport leagues were included. The assessment protocol included the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (Fairburn & Beglin, 1994) and the Sport Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (Dunn et al., 2006). Data analysis involved multivariate variance analysis and regression analysis with blocked entry procedures. Two results should be highlighted: i) younger athletes and athletes with a greater tendency to have eating disorders assumed a higher orientation to perfectionism; ii) the dimension of concern with the mistakes was the main predictor variable of eating disorders. In conclusion, we observed a relationship between the tendency in having eating disorders, the orientation for personal standards of demand and concern with the mistakes
