L. S. Vygotski quoted the Dutch philosopher Baruch Espinosa repeatedly. The notion of body and its relation to the mind arose within the vygotskian concepts as a derivation of Espinosa's ideas. This concept is directly linked to what the Belarusian thought about the psychological functions and emotions. This article proposes to compare Espinosa's and Vygotski's thoughts, with the aim of showing the influence of the former upon the latter. Concepts such as intellectualism, the intellectual tools and determinism, found in the vygotskian psychology, are originally from Espinosa's philosophy. The approximation between the pantheistic philosophy of Spinoza and the Historical-Cultural Mind of Vygotsky allows us to elucidate the constitution of an alternative path to a non-dichotomous understanding of human emotions
