This study aimed to identify possible variations in the use of toys and types of play in children in the first three years of life, discussing the importance of toys for the child development and the type of adult participation in interactions with children. Participants were nine children during the age of the first three years of life and thirteen educators from three child education institutions. Data collected from videotaped interactions were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively by describing children interactions with other children, with toys and educators. The results indicated a greater amount of spontaneous use of toys by children and educators in relative absence of interaction situations, especially in the group of children aged two and three years
