Abstract

ARAUJO, Ana Isabel dos Santos Félix  and  FARO, André. Motivations, difficulties and expectations regarding adoption: perspectives of prospective adoptive parents . Psicol. rev. (Belo Horizonte) [online]. 2017, vol.23, n.3, pp. 790-810. ISSN 1677-1168.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5752/P.1678-9563.2017v23n3p790-810.

This study aimed to delineate motives, difficulties and expectations about future child from the perspective of parents’ candidates to the adoption process, and to characterize the profile of the desired child atInfancy and Youth Judgeship of Aracaju (SE). We interviewed 13 candidates for adoptive parents (singles and couples), based on the following themes: motivations for adoption; preferences for the child; expectations concerning the adoption; and fears about the adoption. The answers were analyzed by IRAMUTEQ software. The results reiterated the subjective complexity of the adoption process, in particular by the clash between fantasy and reality with regard to future adjustment to the new family. Furthermore, there was a preference for girls, white or brown and less than five years old. We conclude that understanding the mean adoption for adopters can help to delineate more appropriate actions for guidance and advice on this question.
