This article is a reflection on the problem of domination and submission in relationships: how it may appear and develop in the first love bond between mother and infant. It was inspired by Jessica Benjamin and her book The Bonds of Love: Psychoanalysis, Feminism, and the Problem of Domination. The author writes about the paradox between two different needs: the need for recognition on one hand, and on the other hand, the need for self-affirmation and the wish to become free from the dependency on the other’s approval. The two needs are opposite poles that have to be balanced so that the problem of domination and submission does not become predominant. One of the author’s basic theoretical instrument is the concept of intersubjectivity, in order to designate the capacity and the availability of a person for social relationships.
