Abstract

This paper intends to discuss the experience with drug addicted women-only groups psychotherapy carried out in the last four years at the Women Treatment Service, a women-only drug addicted facility at Clinics Hospital Psychiatric Institute - Sao Paulo Medical School. The main differences between these groups and mixed gender psychotherapy groups are reported and the main hypotheses and technical approaches are presented. So, the higher length of stay of the patients in women-only groups, the difficulties to leave the psychotherapy, the transference reactions to female therapists and the type of patient’s participation in these groups are discussed. Concluding the author suggests the discussion about the concept of femininity as the ability to recognize our bonds and weaknesses, that is, the incompleteness of human being.
