MARQUES FILHO, Altino Bessa; COELHO, Cassiano Lara de Souza  e  AVILA, Lazslo Antonio. Music removing barriers and minimizing resistance of drug users. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2007, vol.8, n.1, pp. 00-00. ISSN 1677-2970.

A successful drug harm reduction program depends on the easy communication among its participants. Popular music can be used as a tool to remove barriers, improving the communication with the drug users. Psychological motivation and present or future consequences of drug use were analyzed using a song composed with didactic purposes. Music lyrics and a psychoanalytical approach were presented to the graduation students of medicine and nursing of FAMERP (São José do Rio Preto Medicine and Nursing College), who answered a specific questionnaire, and took part of a reflexive group. Music is an interesting didactic tool that minimized resistances, making technical information easier to understand. Harm reduction approaches advocate lessening the harm of drugs through education. Applying this method to drug users is a beneficial tool in order to reduce drug harms. Music can remove barriers. The same way music can motivate people to initiate on drugs, we can use it in the opposite direction. Studies involving the use of music, as a tool to remove barriers should be encouraged.
