Abstract

MANTOVANI, Alexandre. Wide supporting groups: etayage and psychological support in psychotherapeutic groups. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp. 27-32. ISSN 1677-2970.

The notion of emotional support is quite different between psychoanalysis and other kinds of psychotherapies. The psychoanalytical processes contrasts with the pratices called support groups which aim to offer to the patients relief from their symptoms. The group psychotherapies based on psychoanalysis follow this same conception, but they believe that group therapy is also responsible for emotional support during the analytical process. This article aims to discuss the functions of emotional support at psychoanalytical groups, based on the concept of etayage, whereby we can consider the group as a space to receive emotional contents from patients. Our proposal is illustrated with some clinical material provided from experiences with groups called Wide Supporting Groups, in a university social clinic.

Keywords : Support groups; Group psychotherapy; Psychoanalysis.
