Abstract

The illness not only affects the patient but the whole family system, which is undergoing changes, since the available energy and resources are channeled to meet the needs of the sick member. This usually leads to deep tensions. This study aimed to analyze the impact triggered the life of a father who, due to illness of his son, was forced to adapt to the conditions imposed by the treatment. It is characterized as a clinical trial, using case study as methodological strategy. Psychological interventions occurred in a general hospital, from January to May 1999 and completed 67 meetings. The sessions were transcribed and analyzed qualitatively through content analysis. The categories found focus on the family model before the child's illness, the implications of illness in family organization and that organization in coping the treatment. The results experience has that the psychological needs to offer personalized customer service, considering the individual particularities.
