LEVISKY, Ruth Blay. Program “Embrace Your Neighborhood”: violence prevention at the school and quality of life. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.2, pp. 33-38. ISSN 1677-2970.

The “Embrace Your Neighborhood” program had as its objective to develop projects of prevention of violence in the schools and surrounding area, through the formation of workgroups composed by students, teachers, parents, employees and directors. This was a pilot program developed in 2004 in nine schools of São Paulo, including municipal, state and private schools of three neighborhoods. Our team consisted of psychoanalysts, psychologists, educators, sociologists, and artists. The theoretical framework was based in psychoanalytical concepts. The creation of such projects, and of related theatrical plays, made it possible for the students to transform potential aggressiveness into creative, constructive, and repairing expressions. In this way, we offered them the possibility to be the protagonists in the elaboration and execution of communitarian actions that raised their self-esteem and belief in their own capacities. The work shows the importance of learning to live in groups and for the group. We believe that the results of this experiment may be useful to think in the construction of public policies related to the areas of health, education, family, children and adolescents. The project contributed to improving self-esteem and with the development of citizenship.
