Abstract

Abortion is a public health issue, with morbid consequences and death risk for women. It involves controversy and discussions on numerous knowledge fields, as well as implications on SUS (Brazilian public health system), and among professional care for these women. The study has aimed to investigate the public-health professionals’ testimonies about women’s care under abortion circumstances. An exploratory and qualitative research is presented. Its participants include 10 public health professionals of both genders from the gynecology and obstetrics sections from UBS (Unidades Básicas de Saúde, in Portuguese) and from a maternity of São Paulo state’s countryside. In order to collect data, semi-structured interviews were carried to collect the testimonies about the reception and care under the abortion circumstance. The method used to analyze data was the qualitative analysis technique with content analysis. This work has demonstrated the professionals’ difficulties with the controversial theme, which reappraises inner convictions and strongly influences professional work. Moreover, it was highlighted the importance of the psychologist as a member a multi-professional group in gynecology and obstetrics fields to improve care to these women.
