Abstract

GALLAGHER, Iris Massena; FERES-CARNEIRO, Terezinha  and  HENRIQUES, Celia Regina. Plans for the future: perceptions of adults that live with their parents. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp. 4-18. ISSN 1677-2970.

The fragility of human bonds in the post-modern world as a cause of insecurity in subjects is undeniable. Thereby, contemporary young people cope with fears of the future by investing only in the present. This study investigates the extension of family life, focusing on the future plans of adults living with their parents. We interviewed 8 middle class adults living with their parents in Rio de Janeiro, between the ages of 26 and 35.The study uses qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis. It was found that the subjects developed different coping strategies when faced with the instability of the contemporary world. While some subjects aimed to achieve stability in their professional and love lives, others turned to short-term experiences. We emphasize that subjects that avoided making plans for the future sought to protect themselves from possible frustrations. These young people, faced with a context without guarantees, opted for short-term plans and to live without commitments.

Keywords : family coexistence; adult offspring; plans for the future.
