Abstract

This study sought to assess mothers' knowledge about care practices and infant development. The Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory was given to 16 mothers of children under institutional. This instrument has 75 questions that involve four categories. Results, which are organized by category, were: care practices (53,3% right 43,3% wrong), and principles of development (60% and 36,6%). It was possible to conclude that these mothers have a good understanding of questions related to infant development and that sociodemographic factors (schooling, age, number of children) were decisive for developing conceptions of the theme.
