The aim of this study was to verify university students' knowledge about contraceptive methods and its use during their first sexual experience and during data collection. A questionnaire about sociodemographic data, information level and contraceptive practices was administered to 239 students. The majority of the people interviewed had already engaged in a sexual intercourse. In the first sexual experience, 91,7% of women and 81,3% of men used contraceptives, whereas over their last year 96% of women and 90% of men used. Condoms were most used in sexual initiation, being partially substituted for pills in their following relations. Pills and condoms were the most known contraceptive methods. Gender role and factors such as relationships context and time of sexual activity were considered influences in sexual practices.
