Abstract

CALZA, Tiago Zanatta; DELL'AGLIO, Débora Dalbosco  and  SARRIERA, Jorge Castellá. Children's and adolescents' rights and abuse: epidemiology and notification. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp. 14-27. ISSN 1677-2970.

The aim of this paper is to critically discuss Brazilian studies on child and adolescent maltreatment to better understand the characteristics of this violence and the challenges involved in its notification. Although legislation establishes the obligation of protection and guarantee of rights of this population, epidemiological data indicate high levels of maltreatment against Brazilian children and adolescents, especially related to neglect and physical abuse. Regarding difficulties in notification, results show professionals' unpreparedness, fears of reprisal and unawareness of notification process. The importance of investments in violence prevention and professional qualification is highlighted, as well as the need of better articulation of the protection network.

Keywords : maltreatment; childhood; adolescence; children and adolescent code.
