Abstract

SILVA, Fabíola Helena Oliveira Brandão da; CAVALCANTE, Lília Iêda Chaves  and  DELL'AGLIO, Débora Dalbosco. Candidates for child adoption: a documentary study. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.2, pp. 67-80. ISSN 1677-2970.

This study investigated the socio-family profile of candidates for adoption, from the National Adoption Register data. Samples were randomly composed of 418 records of applicants to adopting children with typical development and 380 who accepted those with disabilities and/or chronic diseases. From register data, it was observed that most of the candidates were married, caucasian and of low socioeconomic status. Significant differences were observed between the groups, and the candidates to adopt children with disabilities and/or chronic diseases had lower income and education level than the other group. These results may reflect cultural issues present in the observed profile and further studies are necessary to investigate the adoption motivations.

Keywords : adoption; child; disabilities; chronic diseases.
