Abstract

Children taken away from their families for neglect and abuse are sent to institutional care and may be misunderstood in their school environment, which may affect their performance and relationships. The aim of this study was to understand the process of school inclusion for children waiting for adoption or under legal protection, in a city in Minas Gerais, from the point of view of those involved in this process. Ten children from the institucional care, two professionals from the same institution and three principals from the schools where the children go to were interviewed. Data were analyzed using thematic and enunciation Content Analysis and the results demonstrated institution's difficulties to undertake family's role in school and children's problems regarding integration in school environment. There is a need to create strategies to support children addressing emotional needs and promoting psychological and educational development.
