Abstract

HOHENDORFF, Jean Von et al. Characterization of violence against the elderly from cases reported by health professionals. Rev. SPAGESP [online]. 2018, vol.19, n.2, pp. 64-80. ISSN 1677-2970.

The aim of this study was to characterize the profile of the elderly victims of violence, the situations of violence, the aggressors and the referrals based on the information of the notifications of the Information System of Injuries and Notification (SINAN) of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) in the period from 2010 to 2014. We analyzed 4.222 notifications of violence against the elderly from 60 years of age. Descriptive and Chi-Square ( χ²) analyzes indicated that women are the most frequent victims. The most reported violence was physical violence, perpetrated through the use of corporal force or beating, by a male aggressor, usually the victim's son. We discuss the use of study results in public policies of attention to the Brazilian elderly population.

Keywords : violence; elder abuse; public policies.
