Abstract

The present study is part of a wider investigation into the postponement of the parental project and the aim is to investigate the desire to have children and the negotiation of the parental project process between the members of the couple. For that, a qualitative research was carried out, in which five men and five women from the middle socioeconomic segment, members of distinct couples, between 33 and 37 years old, without children, were interviewed. The results were analyzed according to the content analysis method. From the analysis of the material six categories emerged. To achieve the objectives of this paper, the following categories will be discussed: the ambivalence about the desire to have a child and negotiation between the members of the couple on the project of having children. The results showed that the negotiation of parenthood between the spouses occurs implicitly and non-verbally, with is favored when pre-established prior to marriage.
