In spite of the scientific advances employed in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, it is still a major cause of death in Brazil and the world. Because of its background, the general and individual imagery still connects it with guilt, squalor, death and destruction of life. The treatment is long and hard for patients to bear, forcing them to significantly change their way of being in the world and being with other people. The struggles associated with a serious disease like cancer can be one of the most traumatic experiences possible. Considering all of these points and understanding that the illness has repercussions throughout the very being of the ill individual, it becomes important for the health professionals involved in the problem of cancer treatment are able to understand the world of the cancer patient in order to offer them more complete attention in this regard. Along these very same lines, this study has been taken up with the objective of understanding the experience of the individual ailing with cancer through the narratives of the individuals themselves. We adopted a phenomenological methodology for listening to and analyzing the voices of patients who shared their experiences in psychological support groups.
