Abstract

JUAN, Kelly de. Pre operative psychological preparation for urological surgery. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2005, vol.3, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 2175-3547.

The present study has the aim of developing an informative, pre operative psychological preparation program for urological surgery. The idea is to humanize the surgical procedure and diminish the impact of surgery, thus enhancing the patient's recovery. The author has developed a pre and post surgery accompaniment protocol. Preoperative anticipation unleashes emotional reactions, such as fear and anxiety; some form of irritation was present for 80% of the patients. The patients that received pre and post surgery accompaniment manifested better physical and emotional recovery. The group that had no accompaniment reported more pain. This group represented almost 65% of the patients. 40% of the members of this same group manifested anxiety and stress because of their hospitalization, a characteristic which did not appear in the group which had pre operative accompaniment. The results of this study demonstrated the efficacy of psychological intervention prior to surgery, thus favoring a more functional recovery for the patient.
