Abstract

TACHIBANA, Miriam; DUARTE, Claudia Aparecida Marchetti; SANTOS, Laíse Potério  and  LOPES, Marina Herdeiro. Hyperemesis gravidarum: a case study of the psychological issues present in pregnant women. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.2, pp. 1-22. ISSN 2175-3547.

Hyperemesis gravidica is symptomized by nausea and intense vomiting that persist over the long run of pregnancy. Our purpose was to carry out a study which would focus on the psychological aspects associated with its manifestation from the psychoanalytic perspective. Thus, the methodology brought to bear involved studying the case of a hyperemetic pregnant woman, a patient in a maternity hospital, who was cared for by a psychologist for a five month period. An analysis of the clinical material was carried out from the session notes. The discussion took place among a group of psychologists from the hospital. We saw how much psychoanalytical listening and recognition of the patient's feelings allowed her to pass from a state in which she blamed her husband for the lack of support to a state of greater introspection in which she was able to authentically recognize the side of her that didn't want the pregnancy. This allowed her to experience the pregnancy in a real and spontaneous way, and not simply in an idealized way.

Keywords : Hyperemesis gravidarum; Maternity; Vomiting; Psychoanalysis.
