Abstract

OLIVERA, Gabriela Alves de  and  FONSECA, Patricia Nunes da. Binge eating disorders in the perception of the health professionals. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2006, vol.4, n.2, pp. 1-18. ISSN 2175-3547.

The binge eating disorders is a recent disgnostic category. It is characteristically followed by episodes of hyperphagia involving the sensation of a lack of control. It is a disorder wich is more frequent in womem than men. Considering these aspects, the objective of this study was to identify the perceptions that health professionals have on the binge eating disorders and the patients that suffer from this illness. Nine health professionals (doctors, nutritionists and psychologists) that worked in clinical public hospitals participated. They responded to a semi structured interview. The results showed that although the professionals have different backgrounds, similar perceptions showed up regarding the illness and the patients that suffered from this order. Considering limitations of this, another study involving a larger sample of professionals is suggested, including the perceptions of the family members of these patients since they are important in the therapeutic process.
