This study presents information on epidemiological and nosological data concerning anorexia and nervous bulimia, highlighting its current relevance. Psychodynamic and cognitive behaviors, possibilities of understanding and therapeutic management are analyzed from various conceptual angles. The study emphasizes the emotional component when disease takes hold, the source of conflict at the subconscious level, and the manifestation of symptoms as an illogical and contradictory language expressed by the body; as well as facilitating reflection on the subconscious relationships between an individual and food, in accordance with the psychoanalytical theory that includes those behaviors which are inadequate for maintaining health, as symptoms that denounce hidden psycho suffering. The article concludes by making a comparative study between two populations utilizing a scale that measures magic beliefs about health and feeding, and demonstrates that there are more incidences of those beliefs in individuals with bulimic symptoms. This conclusion is supported by demonstrating a score of 77.8 percent for the items on this scale, a response percentage that confirms a preponderance of beliefs.
