Abstract

SILVA, Daniele Carolina Marques da; LOUREIRO, Marina de Figueiredo  and  PERES, Rodrigo Sanches. Burnout in nursing professionals at hospital context. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.1, pp. 39-51. ISSN 2175-3547.

From a psychosocial perspective, burnout is a syndrome exhibiting symptoms of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional dissatisfaction. Professionals who are involved with the care of others are the most likely to suffer from it. The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of burnout in nursing professionals and to delineate its possible socio-demographic and occupational factors. The sample was composed of 145 nursing professionals from a philanthropic hospital. They were all submitted to a socio-demographic and occupational questionnaire especially conceived of for this purpose, and to the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), i.e., a Brazilian adaptation of it. The results obtained supply elements for a better understanding of individual and work factors associated with the syndrome, and highlight the need for special attention to the mental health of nursing professionals.
