Abstract

BRITO, Valéria Fernandes Dias Silva de et al. Workshops for caregivers of children with cancer: a very human heath education proposal. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2008, vol.6, n.1, pp. 66-81. ISSN 2175-3547.

Group-dynamics workshops, as a method of psychosocial intervention, apply information and new affective meanings derived from experienced coexistence, to the health-illness process. The objective of this study was to develop a space for reflection and exchange of experiences for caregivers while tapping group knowledge. As a methodology reference, the Psychodynamic Theory of Group Proposal by Pichon-Rivière and the dialogical approach of Paulo Freire were used. The workshops were carried out with 28 caregivers of children who were attended by SUS [Sistema Único de Saúde, a health-system network] and who lived in a treatment support house in the City of Belo Horizonte/MG. The observed thematics were: mother-child communication; care of the other children; relationships with the sick child and finally, group-possibilities. What was observed was that the group dynamics made a communication network possible whereby they revealed the relative thoughts and feelings of having a son with cancer, opening new possibilities of confronting the illness.
