ZINI, Ricardo Bernardo et al. Presence of depressive symptoms in obese class II and III. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2009, vol.7, n.2, pp. 75-84. ISSN 2175-3547.

Obesity is a major public health problems in the contemporary world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of depressive symptoms in patients with obesity class II and III. We conducted a cross-sectional study collected prospectively using a questionnaire to collect demographic data and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). In all, 138 subjects participated in the survey, men and women between 30 and 70 years, mean age 45 years and body mass index (BMI) greater than 35 (average 44). The BDI was observed that in class III the average score was 12.65 with gross statistical significance for this difference (P <0.05). The conclusion is that the greater intensity of depressive symptoms in both classes was around minimal and mild. It may also be noted that there was a high incidence of severe symptoms of depression.
