Abstract

CYPRIANO, Laiz Moulin  and  PINTO, Elzimar Evangelista Peixoto. Unexpected arrival: building parenting and extremely premature babies. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2011, vol.9, n.2, pp. 02-25. ISSN 2175-3547.

This objective of this study was to discuss the construction of parenting on parents of extremely premature infants, assisted by a neonatal intensive case unit (NICU). A qualitative approach was used, collecting data through open interviews which were analyzed through content analysis. As a result, three categories were found: the birth of the infant: from its planning to its unexpected arrival; the arrival to the new environment: the NICU and its staff; and the parenting. The importance of the presence of the parents in the NICU was found as an imperative factor for the strengthening of the bond between the parents and their babies. It was highlighted the role attributed to the staff in the construction of the process of parenting, that can minimize the insecurity of the parents on the care of the infant, among other issues, through the environment offered by the NICU.
