Abstract

MORETTO, Maria Lívia Tourinho et al. "Caring for those who care": the psychology health worker. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.1, pp. 52-65. ISSN 2175-3547.

A hospital is an institution that aims to welcome and care for people. However, this same hospital environment is acknowledged as an unhealthy, painful and dangerous place to work. This study aims at presenting the results in the "Caring for the Carers" program, which relates to the causes of psychological stress as identified by the very ones who treat and work with psychological suffering. All of the non doctor health workers from ICHC-USP were invited to attend. In the first stage there were 75 workers in attendance, and in the second stage, 90. The interviews were conducted by 7 duly trained psychologists. It was found that 37.6 percent of the total sample fell within the 41-50 year old age group. The main complaint related to anxiety (26.7 percent), followed by family conflicts and then issues relating to personal affections, i.e., love (26.1 percent). It was concluded that the employees that voluntarily enrolled in the program needed attention specifically because of personal relationships, and not due to environmental factors, as one might assume.
