This research aimed at identifying and describing stressful situations as well as coping strategies related to the professional practice of sixty professionals working in the health area; specifically, psychologists, nurses and social workers. The instruments used for data collection were the ISSL and the adapted-Portuguese version of the Coping Strategies Inventory by Folkman and Lazarus. The results indicated the presence of stress in 51.6 percent of the professionals in the sample. The coping strategy most employed by professionals from the above-mentioned professions was the problem-solving strategy, and the one least used was the confrontation strategy. Most professionals identified “communication and relationships between staff and other professionals” as a stressful situation at work. Therefore, in addition to the need for stress management training, we note the importance of programs designed to develop social skills related to communication and interpersonal relationship skills. Coping adequately with stressful situations may prevent them from interfering during the rest of one’s work career.
