Abstract

FERREIRA, Vanessa dos Santos et al. Emotional experiences and future prospects for women with breast cancer. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.1, pp. 42-63. ISSN 1677-7409.

The present study examined emotional experiences and future prospects of women in treatment for breast cancer. The design was qualitative exploratory. Nine women participated, aged 39-64, at different levels of disease. The instruments used were forms of demographic data and semi-structured interviews, recorded on audio and transcribed. The results showed that emotional experiences and future prospects of the patients were strongly related to the quality of information received at diagnosis. Moreover, the way in which the health team communicated with the patients during treatment was important in order to establish emotional bonds, trust and perspectives for the future. Even with the intense physical and emotional effects that the illness and the treatment of breast cancer bring about, the existence of positive expectations for the future were observed.
