Resumen

COUTINHO, Maria Lúcia Rosa  y  SCHERER, Alessandra d’ Avila. Body image of chronic renal transplant patients. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp. 24-46. ISSN 1677-7409.

The current research study is both exploratory and qualitative, with the aim of analyzing the body image perception of chronic renal patients that have had transplants for at least five years. The results were analyzed using The Bardin Thematic Content Analysis. The presence of a negative body image was observed after transplant surgery due to the side effects of immunosuppressive medication. However, there has been improvement in the quality of life of these patients. The patients experienced feelings of sadness, fear and inferiority before transplantation, and feelings of hope and happiness when they felt free from hemodialysis after the procedure. The concern with aesthetics before receiving the transplant had been noted; however, without prevention and/or health care maintenance through periodic examinations. This possibly led, in some cases, to the silent development of chronic kidney disease.
