Abstract

GONCALVES, Patrícia Ivanca de Espíndola; SILVA, Roseane Amorim da  and  FERREIRA, Lindair Araújo. Suicidal behavior: perceptions and care practices. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp. 64-87. ISSN 1677-7409.

This study sought investigate the perceptions of professionals that work in the emergency room at the regional hospital Agreste Pernambucano with suicidal behavior, and how their perceptions relate to their care practices. The research is qualitative, and the observations were recorded with a field diary and semistructured interviews. The data analysis was based on content analysis in which nine health professionals participated. What they observed was a relationship between the perceptions of the emergency room professionals on suicidal behavior and the practices that they carried out, the idea being that once their understanding about the phenomenon studied was related to the observing health care professionals, theoretical and technical gaps showed up which explained why the emergency room health care practices typically centered on biological issues and healing. The study highlights the importance of ongoing education of the staff in hospital units in order to contribute to their understanding of factors that are connected to suicidal behavior and care practice.
