DUARTE, Tássia de Lima; FERNANDES, Luciana Freitas; FREITAS, Marta Maria Costa  and  MONTEIRO, Kátia Cristine Cavalcante. Psychological effects of insolation contact: a review. Psicol. hosp. (São Paulo) [online]. 2015, vol.13, n.2, pp. 88-113. ISSN 1677-7409.

At the current time, the importance of contact isolation for infection control is unquestionable. The psychological impact of isolation on inpatient reactions have produced scientific discussions about the subject. This article is a literature review aimed at identifying the psychological repercussions of contact isolation in hospitalized patients and strategies to reduce the negative effects. Fifty-two articles were found that were published between 1997 and 2013, of which 18 articles were chosen for discussion. The results point to the presence of symptoms of anxiety and depression, mainly due to the stigma of co-existence with infectious disease and the discontinuity of social interaction. Suggestions to minimize the negative psychological repercussions were organized in the following categories: educational, organizational, structural, communicative and evaluative. The practice of psychology is able to contribute to the comprehensive care of the person in isolation.
